Applying intergroup contact theory to sport-for-development

Despite evidence of its effectiveness in the area conflict studies, intergroup contact theory (ICT) has rarely been applied to specifically designed sport-for-development (SFD) interventions. As such, purpose this study is demonstrate suitability and applicability ICT as a framework analyzing SFD interventions that aim foster integrative social transformation. In paper, we first situate within broader sport contexts before demonstrating utility through reflective analysis League Bilong Laif (LBL), an education-focused intervention Papua New Guinea. Our examination LBL demonstrates may well be useful design deliver interventions, particularly context existing tensions. To maximize opportunities for positive impact, propose aspect ‘cultural relevance excitement potential’ additional critical condition achieving meaningful development.
